Dictionary-word handles vs name handles

Short answer: a handle that is your name or your registered brand has official routes behind it. A handle that is an ordinary word, such as a colour, a city or an object, usually has none, because nobody owns a common word in its everyday sense. That is why word handles are the hardest OG requests and the most common subject of scams.

Routes follow rights, and nobody owns an ordinary word

Every official route needs a reason the platform recognises: someone posing as you, a registered mark being misused, or a name that used to be yours. A handle like a colour or a city name rarely meets any of them. The holder is not impersonating anyone by using a word, and a mark on that word covers only its registered goods or services.

Three questions that sort a request

  1. Is the handle your legal name, a name you are known by, or your registered brand? If not, it is a word handle.
  2. Does the current profile present itself as you or your brand, or sell under your mark? If yes, a route may fit.
  3. Was it your own handle before? If yes, the previous-username route is worth checking.

Two no answers and one no is the common pattern for word handles. Better to know that before paying anyone.

Why word handles attract scams

Short words are the handles people most want and the ones with the fewest real routes. That gap is where sellers step in with talk of reserved lists, insiders and private releases. None of these is an official route. The swaps and scams guide lists the patterns to watch for.

Realistic options for a word handle

Ogclaim only takes on requests where an official route fits, and a failed username claim is covered by the refund policy.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can I trademark a common word to get the handle?

A mark on a common word protects it only for the goods or services it is registered for, and it does not let you stop ordinary uses of the word. It may support a report against a profile that misuses it for those goods, not against any holder.

Is a one-word handle worth more than a name handle?

Sellers price them that way, but trading handles breaks platform rules on all three platforms. Price has nothing to do with whether a claim route exists.

My surname is also a common word. Which counts?

How the profile uses it. If an account presents itself as you, the impersonation route may fit. If it uses the word in its ordinary sense, it does not.

What about made-up words?

An invented word that is your registered brand behaves like a name handle, because the mark is distinctive. That is the strongest position for a short handle.
