Instagram usernames can contain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and are limited to 30 characters. Every handle is unique. Those rules shape everything below.
Length
The shorter the handle, the scarcer it is. A one-character handle has a small pool of possibilities and was claimed early. Four and five character handles are still scarce but sometimes real words or names that people want to build on.
Clean spelling
No underscores to pad it, no repeated letters, no trailing digits. A name that reads as a name is worth more than the same name with a suffix.
Meaning
A real word, a common first name or a famous surname makes a handle valuable to more people. That also makes it more likely to be held by someone with a reason to keep it.
Age and history
A handle that has been on an account since the early years carries a reputation. It is also a handle whose owner may have forgotten the login, which is why dormant handles come up so often.
