The arithmetic
There are a limited number of one, two and three character combinations. Instagram launched years ago and those combinations were claimed by early users, brands and, sometimes, bulk registrants.
Who holds them
- Early individual users who never left
- Brands and companies that registered the obvious names
- Accounts that were sold or traded, against Instagram’s rules
- Dormant accounts nobody has checked in years
Reserved or blocked?
Instagram does not publish a list of reserved or blocked usernames. You will see sellers say a handle is blocked by Instagram to explain a price. Treat that as an unverified sales line.
How a handle is released
A handle becomes available when the holder changes it, deletes the account, or Instagram removes the account. Instagram’s reuse guidance explains what happens to previous names.
What that leaves
For most short handles the realistic routes are narrow: a matching registered mark, a clear impersonation, or your own history with the handle.
