My OG handle was taken while my account was banned

Short answer: A disabled Instagram account normally keeps its name while the decision or appeal is open. If another profile now shows the handle, your account may have been deleted after the appeal window, which frees the name. Appeal what you still can, then plan for the handle separately.

Do this now

  1. Check whether your old account shows as unavailable or a live profile holds the name.
  2. If you still see a disabled notice, appeal from it.
  3. If a new profile holds it, screenshot it.
  4. Report it only if it poses as you.
  5. Choose a fallback you can use today.

What to write

Appeal note: "This is my account. It was disabled on [date]. I believe it was a mistake and I can confirm my identity."
