A short handle says not available, but no account uses it

Likely reasons

• A temporarily deactivated account still holds its name.
• A recently deleted account's name may stay locked for a while.
• An account under restriction can be hidden from search.
• Instagram may block some words from use as handles.

What to do

1. Search the handle logged out and logged in, from two devices.
2. Try it in Edit profile once a week, not every day.
3. Note the date of each try, so you can tell if anything changes.
4. Use a fallback now. See pick a fallback OG handle.

Avoid

People who say they can see who holds a hidden handle, or release it for a fee. Instagram does not sell usernames.
