Instagram sets no OG length
The platform sets one outer limit, 30 characters, and says handles must be unique. Everything else is how people use the word.
Shorter means fewer possible spellings
Each extra character multiplies the possible spellings. This is why the shortest handles are scarce without any special rule making them so.
Length is not the only test
- A clean real word
- A common first or last name
- A handle that was taken early
- A name tied to a well-known brand
Underscores, periods and digits change the picture
Padding with an underscore or a trailing number usually lowers how OG a handle is seen to be, because the clean spelling is gone.
Length affects the work behind a claim
A short handle that is held by someone with a reason to keep it is harder to claim. See what affects the cost.
