A checker says a short handle is free, but Snapchat or TikTok says taken

Short answer: Trust the app, not the checker. A public page can 404 while the name is still held by a deactivated, banned or reserved account. The only reliable test is the username field in Snapchat or TikTok. Never sign in to a checker with your social login.

Why checkers lie

Deactivated and banned accounts keep their names.
Some names are reserved by the platform.
A name can be taken between two checks.

The real test

Open Edit profile or the username field in the app.
Type the name.
Read the message the app shows. Do not save unless you want that name.
Repeat on Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.
