Get back your own OG handle after you changed it

Short answer: Instagram says you can usually change back to a username you used before, if it has not been taken by a new person and has not been recently removed from an active account you do not own. If someone else holds it now, you need a claim route instead.

Instagram allows a return to a previous name in most situations

The help page on previous usernames says you can usually change back if the name is still free of a new holder.

Two things stop it

Try it yourself first

Open Edit profile or Accounts Center and enter the old handle. If it works, no claim is needed.

If someone else holds it, you need a route

The swap route is not one. Impersonation or a registered mark may fit. See the checklist.

Keep a record of your old handles

A note of past usernames helps if you need to show that the name was yours.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is there a time limit for switching back?

Instagram’s page does not give one. Act early, because someone new can take the name.

What if I deleted the account?

Instagram says you can sign up again with the same username if no new person has taken it.

Does Ogclaim need to be involved?

Not if the name is still free. Try the change yourself first.
